1800s Botanical Prints
1800s Botanical Prints - (2) of these antique Botanical Prints are from L'Illustration Horticole, one of the great Belgian horticultural periodicals of the 1800s. Published from 1854 - 1896, L'Illustrion Horticole featured a monthly of noteworthy plants for the greenhouse and garden. Included were descriptions, illustrations, history and advice on cultivating the plants. In 1869 Jean Linden took over publication of the review (Linden is best known for his Iconogrpahy of Orchids). These prints are particularly noteworthy for the richness of the coloring, resulting from the chromolithographic process used to produce them. All of the chromolithograph Botanical prints shown here were prepared by Pieter de Pannemaeker, noted 19th Century Belguim artist and lithographer. The third is an original hand-colored copper engraving - a mezzotint printed in color and the hand-finished, by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1863-1741) is Caranna, Caragne, Caran, Plate 304. This lovely example of early color engraving with additional color added by hand, from Weinmann's Phytanthoza Iconographia (Regensburg: 1737-1745).
